- Metcalf (1997) has
disagreed with this point. We note that one cannot determine from single
polarization transmissions whether a backscatter effect is present or not,
except possibly by examining the reflected power. No changes were detected in
the co-polar circular polarization power at the time of lightning discharges,
down to noise level of these signals (Chen, 1994). A definitive answer to
this question requires the transmission of successive LHC and RHC signals
(McCormick and Hendry, 1979).
